McDonald\u2019s is famous for, well, a lot, but arguably, the chain\u2019s fries are its signature item. Alongside those classic shoe-string cut potatoes, there\u2019s another item: ketchup. If you\u2019ve been eating at McDonald\u2019s<\/a> for a while now, you might think that the chain\u2019s ketchup is simply Heinz<\/a>. That was true for a while, but the ketchup brand and restaurant parted ways in 2013 when Heinz was acquired by Brenado Hees, former CEO of Burger King<\/a>. Since then, McDonald\u2019s has made its own ketchup.<\/p>\n

Now, the brand offers \u201cFancy\u201d ketchup<\/a>, a term that is USDA certified to mean it uses high-quality ingredients for the best possible ketchup. It\u2019s a condiment that is required to have good color, consistency, and flavor. Plus, it must be free of defects. \u201cFancy\u201d or grade-A ketchup must also be at least 33% tomato solids so that it\u2019s thick enough to stay on food.<\/p>\n

As for specifics, McDonald\u2019s ketchup and its old Heinz have three differences in ingredients. McDonald\u2019s newest ketchup omits the onion powder and spice found in Heinz and adds a bit of water. Altogether, it consists of tomato concentrate, distilled vinegar, high fructose corn syrup, water, salt, and natural flavor.<\/p>\n
