\"Laboratory<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

Nicotine has always been an integral part of vaping.
\nWhen the modern electronic cigarette was invented, the driving force was to
\noffer an alternative for smokers. You certainly couldn\u2019t do this without some
\ntype of nicotine, and thus the solution was found in liquid nicotine. Add in
\npropylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG) or a PG\/VG mix, and of course
\nthe all-important flavours, and you essentially have the recipe for what\u2019s in
\nyour e-liquid<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

None of this seemed to be much of a problem when vapour
\ndevices started becoming popular. It\u2019s only when governments became involved
\ndid the idea of liquid nicotine for the general public come under scrutiny.
\nThis was specifically the case in America, where the Food and Drug
\nAdministration (FDA) had a hard time classifying vapour products. They had
\npressure from lobbyist groups to do something, as vaping was becoming hugely
\npopular very quickly.<\/p>\n

At first came pressure from tobacco companies who felt
\nthreatened by vapour. Then came the pharmaceutical companies, who also felt
\nthreatened. In the end the FDA decided to place vapour products more or less in
\nthe category of tobacco products. Regardless of the reasons why, or the pros
\nand cons, they were able to do so for one simple reason. They could point to
\nthe fact that there was nicotine in e-liquid, just like there was nicotine in
\ntobacco.<\/p>\n

In fact, the liquid nicotine we use is actually derived
\nfrom tobacco plants. This is an organic process whereby nicotine is extracted
\nfrom the plant and converted to liquid form. In some ways, this is great to
\nsee. In a world where so many things have become synthetic, at least in
\nnicotine we saw a return to the actual plant to harvest what we need to complete
\nthe e-liquid formula.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, there are down sides to this. One is
\nthat nicotine
\nhas gotten a bad name<\/a><\/strong> that has been hard to shake. It\u2019s become associated
\ndirectly with smoking, to the point where some people think the negative
\nconsequences of smoke are due to smoking. This isn\u2019t the case, as it is the
\nburning of carbons in combination with the thousands of chemicals added to
\ntobacco when cigarettes are produced that are primarily responsible for all of
\nthe bad stuff that happens to smokers.<\/p>\n

Outsmarting the FDA?<\/strong><\/p>\n

In America, nicotine has that bad name, and it was used
\nby the FDA to round up vaping devices and throw them in with tobacco products.
\nAs you can imagine, this has begun to heavily restrict how vapour can be
\nadvertised and sold. It\u2019s created a situation where vape shops and other vapour
\nsuppliers have to follow very firm guidelines. Some of them may be good for the
\npublic, but others just hamper the spread of vapour devices in the first place.<\/p>\n

Well, not everyone has decided to take this lying down.
\nSome decided there was a way around this, and the way was through nicotine. It
\nis, after all, what allowed the FDA to connect vaping to smoking. So, in a lab
\nsomewhere, companies like Next Generation Labs, have focused exclusively on
\ncreating synthetic nicotine. With their patent-pending process, they claim to
\nhave developed nicotine without the need of tobacco leaves, but still create
\nthe same type of biological impact.<\/p>\n

Basically, they are saying they can make you feel like
\nyou have nicotine in your body without producing it from a plant. They also do
\nnot hide the fact that this is a way to sidestep the new regulations the FDA
\nhas put on all vaping products that have nicotine. By the looks of it, they are
\nsucceeding. The FDA has the following on their FAQ section:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s possible that a disposable, closed system device
\nthat contains an e-liquid with truly zero nicotine (or synthetic nicotine)
\nwould not be regulated by the FDA as a tobacco product, if it is not intended
\nor reasonably be expected to be used in such a fashion.\u201d<\/p>\n

There you have it, the words synthetic nicotine are now
\nin the FDA\u2019s vocabulary. Certainly, for the creators of the product, this is a
\nwin. But is there a reason to celebrate? Other than bypassing the FDA, is there
\nanything new here for people who vape? Some might say they\u2019re wary of
\nintroducing something that isn\u2019t known into their e-liquid. Or they may be
\ncautious about what it could do to vapour performance.<\/p>\n

Undoubtedly, this is a subject that needs to be studied
\nmore, so it is hard to be as enthusiastic about it as the creators of synthetic
\nnicotine are. We do already have nicotine and it\u2019s organic, derived from a
\nplant that grows in nature. The idea of putting more things into a lab is\u2026well,
\nconfusing. It does, however, get them over the FDA hurdle. Thankfully, we don\u2019t
\nhave that issue over here.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
