\nmillion of us have taken the steps to ditch the cigarettes and switch to the
\npotentially less harmful method of vaping, a figure that has
\nincreased substantially since the lowly 700,000 reported in 2012. Indeed the UK
\nhas some of the lowest rates of smoking
\npopulations (17%) in Europe, second only to Sweden. Go us!\n<\/p>\n
\nelsewhere, not all is as rosy as we have it here at home. On a global level,
\nvaping is still observed with a certain scepticism,
\nan outlook that is suggestively if not
\nmistakenly steered by the international body of officials that many look to as
\na standard for world health – the eponymous World Health Organisation (WHO).\n<\/p>\n
\nWHO has in the past recognised that vaping has the potential to reduce smoking rates, a statement also
\nacknowledged by Public Health England\u2019s declaration that\u00a0
\n\te-cigarettes<\/a> are around 95% less harmful than tobacco and have the potential
\nto help smokers quit. However, back in 2016 WHO\u2019s Tobacco Control Group, took
\nthe somewhat oppositional stance by saying that member states would also be
\nable to ban vaping products as part of their tobacco control plans.\n<\/p>\nClearer E-Cigarette Use Messages<\/h2>\n
\nstate of affairs if ever there was one, enter the fray, the
\n\tUK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA)<\/a> and a cohort of
\ninternational co-signatories, making their case for a clearer message to be
\nmade when it comes to the use of e-cigarettes. Together
\nwith pro-vaping organisations from 16
\ncountries from across Europe, North America, Asia, and Australasia, UKVIA presented their statement
\nin Geneva prior to the 8
\n\tth<\/sup>
\n\tsession of WHO\u2019s Conference of the Parties (COP8).\n<\/p>\n
\nfrom the vaping community was clear and simple, and if received and implemented
\ncould have the potential to significantly reduce the number of smokers that exist worldwide;\n<\/p>\n\n

\n\t<\/em>\n<\/p>\nWHO is Not on Board<\/h2>\n
\nthink that if respectable countries governed with a conservative constitution,
\nsee the sense and evidence in e-cigarettes representing a potential to help
\ntobacco smokers quit, then you would also think that the World Health Organisation
\nmight be on the same page? Alas, in this instance, common sense seems to shirk
\nits responsibility and waits quivering quietly in the shadows of WHOs foreboding final word.\n<\/p>\n
\nimpassioned appeal to WHO was a logical one that you would think would be met with
\nserious consideration, unfortunately,
\nindustry members and journalists alike were refused entry to proceedings.\n<\/p>\n
\nfor WHO\u2019s Tobacco Control Group has since declared that the plethora of
\nproducts marketed as \u2018smoke-free\u2019 and \u2018heat-not-burn\u2019 have been creating
\nconfusion among consumers,
\n\t\u201cleading
\nthem to believe that they are safer to use, even though there is no independent
\nresearch confirming it.\u201d
