\nvaped, or you\u2019ve got a few e-liquids on the go at once, you may wonder why your
\nfavourite looks a bit off-kilter. Maybe it\u2019s gone cloudy, watery,
\nbrown or the taste just isn\u2019t quite right? In this blog post, we explain
\nwhether – liquids are still safe to use in these states and answer common
\nquestions like, can e-liquids expire?\n<\/p>\n

How Long Should E-Liquid Last?
\n<\/h2>\n

\n\tThere are many factors which could
\naffect how long your – liquid lasts including the quality of Propylene Glycol (PG), Vegetable Glycerin
\n(VG) or nicotine it contains, the
\nflavours and the ratios these are all mixed at.\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThere is no regulated expiration date
\nfor e-liquids, however, we would normally expect
\n\thigh quality e-liquids<\/a> from brands like Vsavi<\/a>,\u00a0Xeo<\/a> or V2<\/a> to stay in excellent
\ncondition for up to two years. However, if you buy a very cheap
\ne-liquid, it\u2019s likely that you\u2019ll notice the deterioration of your liquid much
\nsooner.\n<\/p>\n

Why Else E-Liquids Expire<\/h2>\n

\n\tE juice expiration dates
\nshould be clearly labelled on all bottles but there may be other reasons why liquids go off sooner than expected:\n<\/p>\n

\n\tIncorrect storage
\n\t<\/strong>If e juices get too warm or too cold,
\nthey can expire. Direct sunlight and extreme heat will also make your e juice go
\nbad. To keep e-liquids at their optimum, they should be stored in a dark and
\ncool place, preferably at room temperature.\n<\/p>\n

\n\tInadequately
\nsealed
\n\t
\n\t<\/strong>You should make sure you keep your
\ne juices are kept sealed. If oxygen can get into the bottle, then there\u2019s a
\nmuch higher chance of a drop in nicotine or the e-liquid going sour. Ensure that
\nthe lid is screwed on tightly when not in use and don’t leave the lid off for
\nextended periods of time.\n<\/p>\n

What
\nis Wrong With My E-Liquid?
\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\n\tThere are a few ways that an
\ne-liquid can start to deteriorate and we share a few of them here. It may be
\nthat the e-liquid turns a funny colour – perhaps cloudy or brown, or
\nthat it starts to separate, thin out or collect sediment:\n<\/p>\n

\n\tA
\nchange in consistency
\n\t
\n\t<\/strong>An e-liquid can change from its
\noriginal consistency when it has expired. If you\u2019ve noticed that your
\ne-liquid appears to have clumps in it, it could be that it was manufactured in
\nthe colder months and shipped to a warmer climate. You may also notice a change
\nin the colour – or clarity and this is due to steeping. When e-juice has turned like
\nthis, you can try running it under hot water and shaking it. Separation can
\nsometimes be detected by the presence of sediment which doesn\u2019t dissolve or
\nrecombine with the-liquid when shaken.\n<\/p>\n

My E-Liquid Turned Brown<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\n\tYou may notice that your
\ne-liquid has turned brown. This can be due to the high content of sweetener if
\nit\u2019s a fruit flavour or contains a lot of VG. If you left fruit for some time
\n– let\u2019s take a banana for example – it soon oxidises and becomes darker. This
\nis very similar to what happens with e-liquid. The nicotine in the e-liquid
\nbreaks down with heat or sunlight and the oxygen in the bottle can cause a
\nchemical reaction between it and the-liquid. This can also cause the e-liquid to
\nturn a dark shade and it may give off a distinctly unpleasant peppery taste.\n<\/p>\n

\n\tA drop in nicotine
\n\t
\n\t<\/strong>If it smells ok, e-liquid is
\nusually fine to use. But, the longer you leave it, the less nicotine will be in
\nthere and you\u2019ll find yourself vaping more to compensate for being unable to
\ndraw a decent hit. This is one of the key signs
\nthat your e-liquid has expired.\n<\/p>\n

Unusual Taste or Smell<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\n\tFlavours can change dramatically when an
\ne-liquid has gone off. Citrus or menthol tones can start to taste
\nespecially harsh, \u2018off\u2019 or may turn the-liquid cloudy. You\u00a0 may see tinted oil
\nresting on top of the-liquid and this is the flavouring. A peppery taste is a
\ngood way of knowing that an e-liquid is past its best.\n<\/p>\n

\n\tYou probably
\nknow how much you loved the smell of
\n\tyour favourite e liquid flavour<\/a> when you bought it, so would
\nnotice if it was unusual. If yours smells odd or different, we would
\nalways recommend throwing it away.\n<\/p>\n

Is it Safe to Use Expired Vape Juice?
\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\n\tWhile there isn\u2019t a great deal of
\nevidence to support the safety of vaping expired e juice, it is recommended
\nthat you don’t due to the potential for bad side effects and ruining your
\n\te cigarette<\/a>. As you have seen, e-juices can expire –
\nespecially cheap e-liquids – but can last much longer if stored correctly.\n<\/p>\n

\n\tWhilst e-liquid is unlikely to cause
\nany serious harm, especially when compared to the chemicals found in
\ntraditional cigarettes, if you\u2019re not sure about the look, smell or taste of
\nyour vape juice, the best solution is to throw it away. If shaking the juice
\ndoes not properly redistribute any clumps or sediment lingering in the
\nbottle, throw out the juice, as it is likely to taste unpleasant, even if
\nstill safe.\n<\/p>\n
